Engagement Rings

Different types of engagement rings

If you are not someone who wants to buy an engagement ring and if you are not someone expecting to get one soon, then all engagements rings probably look the same to you – they are shiny and they are round. However, those that know something about this kind of jewelry know that things are not as simple as that because there are different types of engagement rings and a person can be overwhelmed with the wide variety of choices available. This is usually good news for women and men that actually know something about these rings, but for most men who are about to buy a ring, this is usually a nightmare. Fortunately, when they get acquainted with what is actually offered, the shopping process becomes much easier.

When it comes to engagement rings, they are usually grouped into four main categories. The rings belonging to the first category are called solitaire. They are the most common ones and the most elegant ones without a doubt. They consist of a single stone (most commonly a diamond) that is located at the top of the (ring) band and they are held by either 4 or six prongs or claws which maximize the radiance of the stone. There is no denying that this type of ring is a classic that simply can't go out of fashion.

Another type of an engagement ring is a ring with sidestones. This kind of ring has a central stone with at least two significantly smaller stones on each side. It is obviously a bit more extravagant and it helps a woman wearing it make a statement. These smaller stones usually do not overshadow the beauty of the central stone. On the contrary, they make the central stone stand out even more because they make it look bigger and more impressive.

As the words themselves imply, three stone rings contain three stones, one central stone and two side stones. They can all be equal in size and shape, or the central stone can be bigger than the rest. Theoretically, there are other combinations as well, but these two are the most common ones. Although this type of design is not a novelty, it is extraordinary and many women adore it.

There are also the so called tension rings where the stone is not held by prongs but by the two ends of the ring band. This makes the stone look like it is floating, but don't be easily fooled. This kind of setting holds the stone even better than the prongs. Tension rings are really unique and they best accentuate the beauty of the stone.

And the last type of engagement rings are bridal sets. They are not in any way traditional, but they are extremely practical. This is actually a combination of both an engagement ring and a wedding ring, the bands of which are joined together. At first glance, they may seem a bit pricey, but when you consider that you won't have to buy a wedding ring in addition to the engagement ring, you will realize that they are actually quite a wise investment.

In the end, it has to be pointed out that all of these types of rings come in yellow and white gold, silver, platinum and even stainless steel. When it comes to the stones, diamonds are usually the most common ones, but people have the opportunity to choose something else as well. It's all up to the buyer, his budget and his fiancée's preferences.
